This series of nude women shows a strong influence of contemporary French art, - particularly in the dumpy, unidealised bodies,
and this impression is increased by the short hairstyles then favored by fashionable Japanese women -, and certainly is the result
of the study period the artist had spent in France early in the century. The scene, however, is entirely traditional - a woman drying
herself by the side of the bath, probably in an onsen (hot spring resort). - The blocks were cut by Kazue Yamagishi
(1893 - c. 1966), himself a print artist who also had carved blocks, a.o., for Yumeji, Kiyokata, Hiroshi Yoshida, Paul Jacoulet and
Onshi Koshiro. Reference: Lawrence Smith, "Japanese Prints Since 1900. Old Dreams and New Visions"; London, 1983, no. 66. Newland/Shinji, "The feamle image", Leiden, 2000; no. 239. |
