Sketchbook containing twenty-seven
double-page, shijo- and nanga-style drawings
in sumi (black ink) and watercolor on paper

date: early 19th century
size: 27 x 38 cms / c. 10 1/2" x 15"
The sketchbook is cloth-bound as a folding album with
decorative, silvery patterns set against a gray-blue ground;
comes with cloth-wrappers decorated with tsuba designs.

          (*) These preliminary brush drawings are executed in a style typical for that of  Watanabe Nangaku (1767 - 1815) ,
          initiator of the shijo painting style who, by the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries seems to have influenced
          some of the most renowned shijo artists, like Oishi CHINNEN, BUNICHI or NANREI.
