The series title in Japanese reads Gojusan tsugi meisho zue. - The description in the
square, yellow cartouche reads: Yamanaka no sato, kyumei Miyaji-yama ('The village of
Yamanaka and the mountains, formerly named Miyaji-yama'). -
Fujikawa station on the Tokaido, actually, had no touristic sights, but Hiroshige took the opportunity to design one of his most beautiful winter scenes. The print shows the village of Yamanaka (='Amidst-the-Mountain'), located four kilometers east of Fujikawa. Both villages are surrounded by the Futamura-yama ('Two-villages-mountain'), the old name of which was Miyaji-yama. |
