Okabe, Utsu Mountain represents station no. 21 along the Tokaido, and is print no. 22 in the series. - Woodcutters from the village make their way along the narrow pass of Utsu Valley that follows the route of a swiftly flowing stream. Narrow, dark and overgrown with lush vegetation and dense forest, the pass has been a subject in literature from the early Heian period, as, for example the masterpiece Ise monogatari ('The Tale of Ise'). This print is the only one in the series to have been published exclusively by Senkakudô ('Tsuru-ya') |
