Despite the peaceful outlook of this print, the gate was the site where the assassination of Ii Naosuke by the Mito samurai group occurred. Ii Naosuke, - the Great Counselor of the Tokugawa Shogunate -, was the man responsible for opening Japan to the West, for which he was assassinated at the outside of the gate on a snowy morning in March, 1860. |
