The triptych depicts a scene from the kabuki play, "Gion sairei shinkochi" which was performed at the Kado-za in Osaka in May 1816. The actors are (from right to left): Nakamura Utaemon III in the role of Konoshita Tôkichi, Ichikawa Ebijirô I as Matsushita Kaheiji and Kataoka Nizaemon VII as Kato Masakiyo.
