Fine, early work by the artists, stylistically still close to the Utagawa school
and Kuniyoshi, whose pupil he was. The freshness of the colors is due to the
fact that the triptych had been kept in an album, and so protected from too
much light. Scene from the great Battle of Yamazaki in 1582 in which TOYOTOMI HIDEYOSHI defeated MITSUHIDE, who had seized power by forcing the grat leader NOBUNAGA to commit suicide. Here, the battle rages with two samurai on horseback galloping at each other head on. - A great depiction from Yoshitoshi's early period. RARE in such fine state of color preservation and printing quality. Reference: Keyes #155. |
