The series, Shokoku Mu Tamagawa ('Six Jewel Rivers in the Provinces'), depicts
Jewel Rivers in six provinces, each associated with classical poems. This print
depicts Noji (Hagi) Tama River in Yamato province: an aristocrat with his consorts is on a cliff
looking down to the reflection of the full moon in the water.
The waka poem is by Minamoto no Toshiyori (1055-1129): "Let us return again tomorrow to the Jewel River at Noji, where surrounded by bush clover the moon floats on colored ripples." Fan prints by Hiroshige are now rare, - more so those from this particular series. Two other designs of this rarely seen fan-shape window version are in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
