'Hiyodorigoe' from the acclaimed series, 'Genpei' chronicles the 12th century
battles between the Minamoto (Genji) and the Taira (Heike) clans for supremacy
in Japan.
During the Battle of Ichi-no-tani, the Genji forces launched an attack on the unprotected rear side of the Heike fortress on the shore. This assault was executed from the steep Hiyodori cliff above, - a terrain typically deemed too precipitous for horses to navigate. Here, in this weird imagery of 'Hiyodorigoe', the tattooed Genji soldiers ride on horses shaped like the women from the Heike clan. The entire series was showcased in the British Museum exhibition of 2009. Hideo Takeda, as a comic satirist, has been one of the best recognized contemporary Japanese artists. |
