Keyblock proof print: - Design for the series, Kabuki ôkubi-e ('Large Head Kabuki Portraits'). - Print title: Fuji Musume ('The Wisteria Maiden'). The actor, Nakamura Jakuemon IV (1920-2012), who was a Living National Treasure, here in an onnagata role portraying the 'Spirit of the Wisteria' in a dance which derived from an ôtsu-e image of a young woman carrying a wisteria branch.- Ôtsu-e were folk paintings sold as souvenirs of the town of Ôtsu, and have been considered by some as a fore-runner of Ukiyo-e. The actor was an amazing onnagata actor who played all the most difficult princesses and courtesans roles of the Kabuki repertoire.
