Ushiwakamaru, later known as the General Minamoto Yoshitsune, is reading a scroll letter. He is wearing an elaborate kimono on top of the full armor, and sits in front of a large sword display rack. At top right, a New Year's Day decorations: straw ribbon ornaments of the Shinto religion and a yuzuri leaf.
A surimono/egoyomi greeting the New Year. Poem by Ganjotei Shirataka. On the two scrolls in front of him, the kanji letters, "konoe" and "tora", can be seen. They indicate the year of the tiger, which is 1830.
